50 Best Fallout 4 Mods (2026)

Official Fallout 4 artwork

The best Fallout 4 mods in 2026 start with the fixes and frameworks nearly every load order is built on (the script extender, the Unofficial Patch, a crash fixer) and grow into settlement overhauls, storms, combat changes and fully voiced quest mods. We checked all 50 below against their creators’ own Nexus Mods pages on September 21, 2026. Every one is free, and unless an entry says otherwise, each has a build for the current PC version of Fallout 4.

“Current version” has moved twice, and it matters. The April 2024 next-gen update (version 1.10.984 after its May follow-up) broke every mod that loads through the Fallout 4 Script Extender (F4SE), and the November 10, 2025 Anniversary Edition update (1.11.137) broke them all again, because F4SE plugins hook the game’s exact executable. Bethesda has patched several more times since, most recently on August 18, 2026, and F4SE’s newest build targets game version 1.11.240: that is what we mean by current. Any entry marked Needs: F4SE only works once its creator ships a build for your exact version, so after every Bethesda patch, wait for F4SE and Address Library to update before you load a save. F4SE supports the Steam version only, per its page, and a mod manager (Mod Organizer 2 or Vortex) makes all of this far easier. Some players deliberately stay on the older 1.10.163 build for mods that were never updated; the picks here assume the current Steam version instead.

Essentials and Stability Fixes

Fallout 4 Script Extender (F4SE) mod for Fallout 4 by F4SE Team

1. Fallout 4 Script Extender (F4SE)

F4SE is the foundation that roughly half this list depends on. It expands what mods can do with the game’s scripting without modifying any files on disk, and you launch the game through its loader instead of the normal executable. Its page warns that every native plugin has to be rebuilt by its own creator after a game update, so a plugin failing to load is usually not F4SE’s fault. Version 0.7.9 supports game version 1.11.240. Creator: F4SE Team. Download: Fallout 4 Script Extender (F4SE) on Nexus Mods.

Fallout 4 gameplay

2. Address Library for F4SE Plugins

Address Library is the quiet partner to F4SE. It gives plugins version-independent IDs so they can find the right spots in the game’s code at runtime, which is why many script extender mods list it as a requirement. Its creator updated it for game version 1.11.240 on August 21, 2026. Pick the file that matches your game version, because the wrong one is a common reason plugins fail silently. Creator: Ryan. Needs: F4SE. Download: Address Library for F4SE Plugins on Nexus Mods.

Unofficial Fallout 4 Patch mod for Fallout 4 by The Unofficial Patch Project Team

3. Unofficial Fallout 4 Patch

The Unofficial Fallout 4 Patch (UFO4P) fixes hundreds of quest, NPC, item, text and placement bugs Bethesda never resolved, from the team behind the unofficial Oblivion and Skyrim patches. It avoids unsafe changes such as deleting stock objects and is built to sit alongside as many mods as possible. The current release requires game version 1.11.221 or newer and, per its page, all 15 official DLC files, and older game versions are no longer supported. Creator: The Unofficial Patch Project Team. Download: Unofficial Fallout 4 Patch on Nexus Mods.

Community Fixes Merged mod for Fallout 4 by The Community

4. Community Fixes Merged

Community Fixes Merged rolls dozens of small, openly licensed community bug fixes into one plugin: mesh bounds, projectile fixes, sound fixes, lighting glitches, and oddities such as settlement Brahmin despawning. It saves a long list of single-purpose plugins and was updated on September 16, 2026. It is built to go on top of the Unofficial Patch rather than replace it. Creator: The Community. Needs: Unofficial Fallout 4 Patch. Download: Community Fixes Merged on Nexus Mods.

Addictol mod for Fallout 4 by Dear Modding FO4 and DoubleYou

5. Addictol

Addictol is the crash fixer to use on the current version. It combines several engine patches, including Buffout 4, X-Cell and Mentats, into one F4SE plugin that fixes crashes and improves optimization, and it writes crash logs. That matters because the popular Buffout 4 NG says on its own page that it does not support the Anniversary Edition and points players here. Addictol’s page lists the old gen, next gen and Anniversary versions of the game as supported. Creator: Dear Modding FO4 and DoubleYou. Needs: F4SE, Address Library, the Unofficial Patch, plus a few smaller files listed on its page. Download: Addictol on Nexus Mods.

High FPS Physics Fix mod for Fallout 4 by Antonix35

6. High FPS Physics Fix

Fallout 4 ties game speed to frame rate, which causes physics bugs on high refresh rate monitors. High FPS Physics Fix unties them, so you can run above 60 frames per second without objects flying around, and it also smooths stuttering and cuts loading screen time (especially on an SSD). Its page lists support for game versions up to 1.11.240, and it was updated on September 8, 2026. Creator: Antonix35. Needs: F4SE, Address Library. Download: High FPS Physics Fix on Nexus Mods.

Previsibines Repair Pack (PRP) mod for Fallout 4 by BenRierimanu

7. Previsibines Repair Pack (PRP)

PRP is a full rebuild of the game’s precombined meshes and occlusion data, which the engine uses to decide what to draw. Its page describes it as fixing visual and technical issues the vanilla data has, including ones the Unofficial Patch cannot handle by design, and even raising frame rates. Its main file is built for game version 1.11.240, with a separate 1.10.163 file for older setups. Creator: BenRierimanu. Needs: Unofficial Fallout 4 Patch. Download: Previsibines Repair Pack on Nexus Mods.

Weapon Debris Crash Fix mod for Fallout 4 by Antonix35

8. Weapon Debris Crash Fix

The Weapon Debris graphics setting is notorious for crashing the game on modern graphics cards. This plugin fixes those crashes while keeping debris collision and physics working. Version 2.0 replaces the game’s outdated NVIDIA Flex code with a compatibility layer supporting CUDA and Direct3D 11, and its page says the Direct3D 11 path also works on AMD and Intel cards. It was updated on September 19, 2026. Creator: Antonix35. Needs: F4SE, Address Library. Download: Weapon Debris Crash Fix on Nexus Mods.

Sprint Stuttering Fix mod for Fallout 4 by AntoniX

9. Sprint Stuttering Fix

Sprinting over uneven ground in first person makes the camera twitch in the base game. Its creator traced it to a speed limit tied to the camera code for vertibird flight, and this small plugin removes that limit so sprinting stays smooth. It is a set-and-forget install with nothing to configure, and it was last updated on August 22, 2026. Creator: AntoniX. Needs: F4SE, Address Library. Download: Sprint Stuttering Fix on Nexus Mods.

Interface and Quality of Life

Mod Configuration Menu mod for Fallout 4 by reg2k, Neanka and shadowslasher410

10. Mod Configuration Menu

The Mod Configuration Menu (MCM) adds one settings page for all your mods, reached from the Pause menu, with sliders, dropdowns, checkboxes and keybinds. Settings are stored in per-mod INI files you can back up, it uses no plugin slot, and it does not write to your save. A large share of the mods below use it for their options. Its main file is built for game version 1.11.240. Creator: reg2k, Neanka and shadowslasher410. Needs: F4SE. Download: Mod Configuration Menu on Nexus Mods.

Extended Dialogue Interface mod for Fallout 4 by reg2k and Neanka

11. Extended Dialogue Interface

The base game forces every conversation into exactly four short, vague replies. The Extended Dialogue Interface (XDI) shows the full text of each reply and lifts the four-option limit, so quest mods can offer as many choices as they need. Quest mods such as Point Lookout (number 50) require it. It replaces the older Full Dialogue Interface rather than running alongside it, and its current file targets game version 1.11.240. Creator: reg2k and Neanka. Needs: F4SE. Download: Extended Dialogue Interface on Nexus Mods.

LooksMenu mod for Fallout 4 by Expired6978

12. LooksMenu

LooksMenu rebuilds character creation. It shows far more options at once, lets you pick facial features from a list instead of clicking on the face, and adds saving and loading of presets, which the base game cannot do. It also supports skin and makeup coloring, extra hair colors and overlays. Most character preset mods require it, and it was updated on September 1, 2026. Creator: Expired6978. Needs: F4SE. Download: LooksMenu on Nexus Mods.

HUDFramework mod for Fallout 4 by registrator2000

13. HUDFramework

HUDFramework lets several mods add widgets to your HUD without overwriting each other’s interface files, which used to make every HUD mod conflict with every other one. You will not see anything from it alone, but settlement and combat mods, including Sim Settlements 2, rely on it. It does not require F4SE, and its page includes an auto-patcher for other interface mods that replace the HUD file. Creator: registrator2000. Download: HUDFramework on Nexus Mods.

Valdacil's Item Sorting mod for Fallout 4 by Valdacil

14. Valdacil’s Item Sorting

Valdacil’s Item Sorting adds short tags to item names so your inventory groups sensibly: notes, keys, food, chems and gear each sit together, with the things you use most near the top. Version 11 dropped its old dependency on the AWKCR keyword mod in favor of a tiny keyword file of its own. Its page warns that moving to version 11 needs a save that never had AWKCR in it. It was last updated in October 2024. Creator: Valdacil. Download: Valdacil’s Item Sorting on Nexus Mods.

Improved Map with Visible Roads mod for Fallout 4 by mm137

15. Improved Map with Visible Roads

The vanilla Pip-Boy map is a washed-out blur. Improved Map with Visible Roads replaces it with a high-contrast map where roads, topography and the waterline are clearly visible, with an optional number grid and regions, plus Far Harbor support in its optional files. It was last updated in 2016, but it is a texture and plugin mod with no script extender code, so the game updates have not broken it. Creator: mm137. Download: Improved Map with Visible Roads on Nexus Mods.

Crafting Highlight Fix mod for Fallout 4 by registrator2000

16. Crafting Highlight Fix

At every workbench, the game covers your gear in a glowing shader that hides the very details you are trying to judge. Crafting Highlight Fix removes it, or switches the Power Armor station and robot workbench to an outline-only effect instead. It is a code patch with no plugin file and no scripts attached to objects, so its page says it is safe to add or remove at any time. Creator: registrator2000. Needs: F4SE, Mod Configuration Menu. Download: Crafting Highlight Fix on Nexus Mods.

Visible Companion Affinity mod for Fallout 4 by CDante

17. Visible Companion Affinity

Companions in Fallout 4 track how they feel about you, but the game only ever says “Piper liked that.” Visible Companion Affinity adds the actual number to those notifications, shows how much it moved, and lets you check the current value through relationship dialogue or an Affinity List item in your Aid tab. It is a small scripted mod, last updated in February 2024. Creator: CDante. Download: Visible Companion Affinity on Nexus Mods.

Everyone's Best Friend mod for Fallout 4 by Valdacil

18. Everyone’s Best Friend

Everyone’s Best Friend lets you bring Dogmeat and a regular companion at the same time, using the game’s own follower systems rather than console commands. Its author lays out the evidence that Bethesda originally intended this, from perk behavior to Dogmeat’s lower carry capacity, and it also bundles a fix for companion idle chatter spam. It dates to 2017 and uses no script extender. Creator: Valdacil. Download: Everyone’s Best Friend on Nexus Mods.

Visuals, Weather and Lighting

True Storms: Wasteland Edition mod for Fallout 4 by fadingsignal

19. True Storms: Wasteland Edition

True Storms overhauls Fallout 4’s weather with heavy rain, dust storms, dense fog and hazardous radiation rain, plus new lightning effects, intense thunder, interior rain sounds and optional Ghoul hordes during storms. It covers the Commonwealth, Far Harbor and Nuka-World, and every core feature can be toggled from a holotape or MCM. Its page states plainly that it works with the 2024 next-gen update and the Anniversary Edition. Creator: fadingsignal. Download: True Storms: Wasteland Edition on Nexus Mods.

Vivid Fallout: All in One mod for Fallout 4 by Hein84

20. Vivid Fallout: All in One

Vivid Fallout retextures the landscape, rocks, trees, roads and bridges in sharper detail that still keeps the vanilla look. This All in One package bundles several of the creator’s individual texture mods into one download, uses ESL-flagged plugins that do not count toward the plugin limit, and, per its page, uses less video memory than the original textures. It received an April 2026 update. Creator: Hein84. Download: Vivid Fallout: All in One on Nexus Mods.

Darker Nights mod for Fallout 4 by unforbidable

21. Darker Nights

Nights in the vanilla Commonwealth are bright enough to read by. Darker Nights makes them properly dark, with seven levels to choose from, and darkens interiors at night unless they are well lit. Optional plugins adjust how well NPCs spot you in the dark so stealth stays fair. It is one of the most endorsed visual mods for the game and was updated on November 10, 2025. Creator: unforbidable. Download: Darker Nights on Nexus Mods.

Lightweight Lighting mod for Fallout 4 by SpringHeelJon

22. Lightweight Lighting

Lightweight Lighting overhauls image spaces, lighting templates and weather for the base game and every DLC, aiming for darker and more consistent interiors, moodier nights and more varied weather while keeping the vanilla color palette. Its creator built it with performance and compatibility in mind, with no cell edits, so it suits players who cannot run an ENB. An interiors-only version is available. Creator: SpringHeelJon. Download: Lightweight Lighting on Nexus Mods.

Ultra Interior Lighting mod for Fallout 4 by gargorias

23. Ultra Interior Lighting

Most Fallout 4 interiors cast shadows from only a small share of their lights. Ultra Interior Lighting hand-places thousands of new shadow-casting lights, raising that share to between 80 and 100 percent in most interiors including the DLC, and adjusts fog and ambience to match. Its page also notes lighting bug fixes and a triggered lighting system for complex areas. A darker ambience plugin is optional. Creator: gargorias. Download: Ultra Interior Lighting on Nexus Mods.

Gameplay and Combat

Better Locational Damage mod for Fallout 4 by Zzyxzz

24. Better Locational Damage

Better Locational Damage reworks combat around where you hit. Headshots are scripted and depend on caliber (a 10mm kills a human but not a super mutant), helmets can stop them, enemy health is reduced to end bullet sponges, and it adds bleeding, stagger, sneak stabs and shotgun knockback. It has optional overhauls for armor, NPC scaling and more, and was updated in February 2026. Mature content. Creator: Zzyxzz. Needs: F4SE, Mod Configuration Menu, RobCo Patcher. Download: Better Locational Damage on Nexus Mods.

Bullet Counted Reload System mod for Fallout 4 by shavkacagarikia

25. Bullet Counted Reload System

In the base game, a shotgun or lever-action rifle always plays its full reload no matter how many shells you fired. The Bullet Counted Reload System (BCR) adds proper round-by-round reloads at the engine level. On its own it changes nothing: weapon mods add support for it, and optional files add it to the Far Harbor lever-action rifle. It was updated on August 29, 2026. Creator: shavkacagarikia. Needs: F4SE. Download: Bullet Counted Reload System on Nexus Mods.

Classic Holstered Weapons System mod for Fallout 4 by shavkacagarikia

26. Classic Holstered Weapons System

Fallout 4 makes your holstered weapon vanish into thin air. Classic Holstered Weapons restores visible holstered weapons on the player and human NPCs, as in earlier Fallout games, and works with most modded weapons automatically. It uses no plugin slot and has an in-game positioner for adjustments. Its creator updated it for 1.11.240 in August 2026, though its page now also recommends the newer Visible Favorites mod as an alternative. Creator: shavkacagarikia. Needs: F4SE. Download: Classic Holstered Weapons System on Nexus Mods.

Unlimited Survival Mode mod for Fallout 4 by Kassent

27. Unlimited Survival Mode

Survival difficulty is the best way to play Fallout 4 for many fans, but it disables saving, fast travel and the console. Unlimited Survival Mode lets you switch those restrictions back on one by one, including quick saves, autosaves, fast travel and the compass markers, so you keep the survival mechanics you like. Its December 2025 update added Anniversary Edition support. Creator: Kassent. Needs: F4SE (MCM optional). Download: Unlimited Survival Mode on Nexus Mods.

Horizon mod for Fallout 4 by Zawinul

28. Horizon

Horizon is a ground-up gameplay overhaul with thousands of changes: survival mechanics, crafting, loot, leveling and healing (which requires real medical treatment) are all redesigned. Its creator is blunt that it is a new framework rather than a drop-in mod, and warns against third-party mod list collections that include it. Anniversary Edition players also need its font fix file, per its page. Creator: Zawinul. Download: Horizon on Nexus Mods.

NPCs Travel mod for Fallout 4 by aiueoooo

29. NPCs Travel

The roads of the Commonwealth can feel empty between set pieces. NPCs Travel adds travelers who roam the Commonwealth, Far Harbor and Nuka-World, heading to randomly chosen destinations, with some destinations unlocking as you complete quests. Its page warns that versions before 3.0 are not compatible with 3.0 and newer, so start fresh if you are upgrading. It was updated on September 6, 2026. Creator: aiueoooo. Download: NPCs Travel on Nexus Mods.

Campsite mod for Fallout 4 by fadingsignal

30. Campsite

Campsite adds simple wasteland camping: craftable, carryable tents, sleeping bags with new HD textures, campfires, lanterns, a cooking pot and even a dog bed for Dogmeat, all built at the chem station under a new Camping Gear category. It pairs naturally with survival difficulty. Its page says it is safe to add mid-playthrough and is still fully functional and actively maintained. Creator: fadingsignal. Download: Campsite on Nexus Mods.

31. See Through Scopes

You zone plots and settlers build and upgrade them over time, while a long voiced main quest gives you a reason to rebuild the Commonwealth. Chapters 2 and 3 of the story are separate downloads from the same team, all updated on September 4, 2026. Creator: Sim Settlements Team. Needs: Workshop Framework, HUDFramework. Download: Sim Settlements 2 on Nexus Mods.

Workshop Framework opens up the settlement system for other mods and gives players faster, more stable workshop scripts plus new controls. It is required by Sim Settlements 2 and many settlement mods. Its page says it has worked with the next-gen update since version 2.4.0, and players who stay on the older game version need its Old-Gen Replacers file. Load it after the Unofficial Patch. Its main file targets game version 1.11.240, and its creator keeps builds for older versions in the Files section. Creator: TheLich. Needs: F4SE. Download: Place Everywhere on Nexus Mods.

Fallout 4: Point Lookout mod for Fallout 4 by The Capital Wasteland Team

50. Fallout 4: Point Lookout

Point Lookout is a faithful fan recreation of Fallout 3’s swampy DLC, rebuilt in Fallout 4: the full worldspace, main quest and side quests, every NPC, more than 25 weapons and 50 clothing items, and a new location with a workshop. Its page notes a few minor NPCs are still unvoiced and that loose files must be enabled for its F4SE scripts. It was last updated in 2022. Creator: The Capital Wasteland Team. Needs: Extended Dialogue Interface. Download: Fallout 4: Point Lookout on Nexus Mods.

How We Chose These Mods

Every mod here was checked against its creator’s own Nexus Mods page on September 21, 2026, for three things: that it is free and still downloadable, that the download comes from its creator, and that it works on the current Steam version of the game (1.11.240). For script extender mods, that means the creator has shipped a build for the current version; for plugin-only mods, it means nothing on the page says the recent updates broke it. We left out adult mods, mods whose pages say they do not support the Anniversary Edition (including Buffout 4 NG and Boston FPS Fix), and survival overhauls such as FROST that require downgrading the game.

Only download from the creator pages linked above. Re-upload sites and bundled “mod packs” are the most common way players end up with outdated or malicious files, and older lists online still point to the original Buffout 4, which has not been updated since 2023. If you are coming from another game, our Sims 4 mods list and Valheim mods guide follow the same rules, and our rundown of how many Fallout games there are covers where Fallout 4 sits in the series.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Fallout 4 mods should I install first? Start with F4SE and Address Library, then the Unofficial Fallout 4 Patch, Addictol and High FPS Physics Fix. With that base working, add everything else.

Why did my Fallout 4 mods stop working after an update? Each Bethesda patch changes the game’s executable, which breaks every F4SE plugin until F4SE and each mod’s creator ship a new build. This happened after the 2024 next-gen update and again after the November 2025 Anniversary Edition update, so after any patch, check each creator’s page before loading a save.

Are Fallout 4 mods safe to download? Mods downloaded from the creator’s own page are the safest option. Avoid re-upload sites and bundled packs, and keep a backup save before adding or removing script-heavy mods.

Can you use mods on Fallout 4 on Xbox or PlayStation? Yes, through the in-game Creations menu, and several mods here have official console versions per their pages. Script extender mods are PC only, and PlayStation has tighter limits on what Creations can include. For how console modding works in another big RPG, see our guide to Witcher 3 mods on consoles.

Are these Fallout 4 mods free? Yes, all 50 are free on Nexus Mods. Bethesda’s in-game Creations menu also sells paid content, which is separate from everything on this list.
