To become a witch or warlock in The Sims 2, you need the Apartment Life expansion, then befriend one of the three High Witches or Warlocks who roam community lots and ask them to teach you their ways. The Legacy Collection includes Apartment Life, so any current Steam or EA App copy can do it. This guide covers where the witches spawn, the friendship you need, what your Sim receives, how alignment and the Magic skill work, and how to give it up.
The Pack You Need
Witches arrived with Apartment Life, the eighth and final expansion. The Legacy Collection (January 2025) bundles every expansion and stuff pack except IKEA Home Stuff, and the older Ultimate Collection also had Apartment Life, so both editions support witches. Only a base game or early-expansion disc install lacks them.
Legacy patch notes through April 2025 list no witch-specific bugs or changes, so verified against those notes, everything below works the same as it did in 2008.
Finding a High Witch
Three NPC spellcasters visit community lots after the expansion is installed, one for each alignment. The good one is dressed in white and gold, the evil one in black and green with pale skin, and the neutral one somewhere between. They arrive as visitors on community lots, so send your Sim downtown or to a park and look for someone in robes with a broom; per long-standing player documentation they are more likely to show up at night and can also turn up as walk-bys once an alignment has a foothold in your neighborhood. If you never see one, keep visiting different lots; their appearance is random, not tied to a schedule. Downtown lots from Nightlife count, and so do the shopping lots that come with Open for Business.
Once you spot one, greet them and start building a friendship. The Legacy Collection did not change the friendship thresholds, and the interaction that matters only unlocks once the two Sims are friends, so aim for the Friends mark rather than a specific number.
Asking to Be Taught
When the relationship is high enough, the witch’s pie menu gains a magic-related option to ask them to teach your Sim their ways. Accept and the change is immediate: your Sim becomes a witch (or warlock, the male title) of that witch’s alignment and receives a spellbook, a cauldron and a broom in their inventory. Place the cauldron on the lot; it is where reagents are made and where potions are brewed. The spellbook is what your Sim studies to raise the Magic skill and learn spells.
Your Sim’s outfit and, for good and evil alignments, their skin change on the spot. The Legacy Collection keeps the same three looks.
If you would rather skip the search, you can befriend a witch, then throw a party and invite them, or with boolProp testingCheatsEnabled true use the Shift-click debug options on your Sim; player documentation lists a make-witch option there. Our Sims 2 cheats guide covers turning that on and off.
Alignment, Spells and Reagents
Every witch sits on a scale from Infallibly Good through Neutral to Atrociously Evil. Casting good spells nudges the Sim toward good; casting evil spells nudges toward evil; neutral spells hold steady. Alignment decides which spells your Sim can learn, so a witch who wants the evil curses has to earn their way there by casting, not by asking a second High Witch. The costume and skin update as the alignment crosses each threshold.
Spells cost reagents, made at the cauldron from the Magic menu, and the Magic skill (visible on the Skills panel once your Sim is a witch) gates which spells and reagents are available. Study the spellbook to raise it. Reagents and spells also cost simoleons at the cauldron, so a fresh witch with an empty wallet may want our money cheats guide.
Witches can fly on the broom to community lots, which replaces the taxi, and can teach other Sims they are friends with, which is how a whole household or coven gets started without waiting for the NPCs again.
Curing a Witch
Both the good and evil branches include a spell that removes witchcraft from a Sim, and the cauldron can brew a curing potion once the Magic skill is high enough. Either way the Sim returns to normal, keeps their memories, and can be made a witch again later. This is the same pattern as the other Apartment Life and earlier occults; see how to become a vampire, a werewolf and a PlantSim for their cures. A Sim can hold more than one occult state at once, so a vampire witch is possible.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a specific expansion to become a witch? Yes, Apartment Life. It is included in the Legacy Collection and the Ultimate Collection.
Where do the High Witches appear? On community lots, as random visitors. There is no fixed spawn time or lot, so keep visiting different ones.
Can teens become witches? Teens and older can. Children cannot be taught, but they can be born to witch parents without inheriting the state.
Is a warlock different from a witch? No. Warlock is simply the male title; the spells, alignment scale and objects are identical.
Can I switch from good to evil? Yes, by casting spells of the other alignment until the scale crosses over. The costume changes with it.
