To see the full secret ending in Kingdom Hearts 2 Final Mix, you need to beat the game and hold the Gold Crown, which means earning all three Proofs from the post-game challenges; on Proud you also need a complete Jiminy’s Journal, and on Standard you additionally need every Gummi Mission and Gummi treasure. The shorter secret video, “The Gathering,” only needs you to finish the game with every world completed.
Below we break the conditions down by difficulty and version, explain what the Gold Crown and a completed Journal actually involve, and cover how to watch the ending if you have already finished the game. We keep story details out.
Which Version This Guide Covers
This guide covers Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix, the version included in KINGDOM HEARTS -HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX-, which is how the game is sold today on PS4 (playable on PS5), Xbox One, and PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store. The Nintendo Switch cloud version was pulled from sale on June 9, 2026, per Square Enix, and stays playable for existing owners until June 9, 2027. On October 8, 2026, Square Enix releases the Kingdom Hearts Collection I~III, which includes these same games running natively on Nintendo Switch 2, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC through the Microsoft Store, and Switch cloud owners can transfer their saves to the Switch 2 version.
The original 2005 PS2 release of Kingdom Hearts II has only one secret video and different rules, covered in its own section below. Final Mix keeps that video and adds a longer one on top of it, along with Critical Mode, a difficulty that does not exist in the original.
The Two Secret Videos in Final Mix
Per the community wiki, Final Mix has two tiers of secret ending:
- “The Gathering.” This is the secret video from the original release. In Final Mix, it unlocks on any difficulty when you finish the game and complete all worlds.
- “Birth by Sleep.” A longer secret video that continues where “The Gathering” leaves off. This is the one most people mean by “the secret ending,” and it has much stricter conditions.
Without spoiling anything: the longer video is a teaser that points toward Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep, the PSP prequel that came out later. That game has since made our list of the best PSP games of all time.
Final Mix Requirements by Difficulty
Per the community wiki, here is what unlocks the longer “Birth by Sleep” secret ending on each difficulty:
| Difficulty | Requirements |
|---|---|
| Beginner | Not available |
| Standard | Beat the game, complete Jiminy’s Journal, complete all Gummi Missions and collect every Gummi treasure, and get the Gold Crown |
| Proud | Beat the game, complete Jiminy’s Journal, and get the Gold Crown |
| Critical | Beat the game and get the Gold Crown |
It looks backwards, but that is how the requirements are listed: the harder the difficulty, the shorter the checklist. On Critical, the Gold Crown and the final boss are all you need. Some guides online give different lists for Critical and Standard. We have gone with the community wiki’s breakdown, which matches its separate list of Final Mix changes: on Critical, the video just requires the Gold Crown.
What the Gold Crown Means
The Gold Crown is not an item you find. It is a cosmetic crown Sora wears once he holds all three Proofs, key items added in Final Mix. Per the community wiki, one Proof gives a copper crown, two give silver, and all three give gold.
The three Proofs come from Final Mix’s toughest optional content:
- Proof of Connection: defeat the Lingering Will.
- Proof of Nonexistence: defeat all of the Organization XIII data replicas in the Garden of Assemblage.
- Proof of Peace: appease all thirteen of the Mushroom XIII.
These are the hardest fights and challenges in the game, so plan to be well into the post-game with strong gear and trained Drive Forms. A leveled Limit Form is worth having for any fight where Sora ends up alone, and having Glide on Sora’s normal form makes moving around the post-game much faster.
What a Completed Jiminy’s Journal Involves
On Standard and Proud, you also need Jiminy’s Journal at 100 percent. Per the community wiki, Kingdom Hearts II’s Journal requires:
- Opening every treasure chest in the game.
- Collecting all 144 puzzle pieces (Final Mix only).
- Meeting the minimum scores in every mini-game, not just playing them.
- Filling out the synthesis records along with the rest of the Journal’s entries.
It is a long list, and it is the main reason Critical is the shortest route to the full video. For a sense of the overall time commitment, our guide to how long Kingdom Hearts takes to beat is a good place to start.
Original PS2 Version Requirements
The original Kingdom Hearts II has only “The Gathering.” Per the community wiki:
- Beginner: not available.
- Standard: complete Jiminy’s Journal.
- Proud: finish the game and complete all worlds.
There is no Critical Mode, no Proofs and no Gold Crown in the original release. Oddly, Proud is again the easier path.
How to Watch It If You Already Beat the Game
The secret ending plays after the credits, so the conditions have to be met before your final battle. Player guides describe the usual approach: after the credits, Kingdom Hearts II lets you save a clear file that puts you back before the final fight. Load that save, finish whatever conditions you are missing, and beat the final boss again. If you are new to the series and wondering which game to play after this, our overview of how many Kingdom Hearts games there are lays out the whole series.
