Minecraft Dungeons II has no classes: your hero’s role comes entirely from the gear you equip. Xbox Wire put it plainly after an early demo: “Like in the first game, you don’t choose a class but rather build out your own through the gear that you curate.” There is no skill tree either, so a tank, an archer or a summoner is just a loadout you can change whenever you like.
This guide explains the gear slots that make up a build, what each one contributes, how the Blacksmith and Enchantsmith refine it, and example builds from official previews and reviews. It covers the launch version (September 29, 2026), and the system is identical on Xbox Series X|S, PC, PS5, Nintendo Switch and Switch 2. Details are verified against Mojang’s and Xbox’s official material, with reviewers’ reports attributed.
No Classes, No Skill Trees
Reviewers agree on the structure. Game Informer’s review says player abilities “aren’t tied to character classes like Barbarian or Monk,” and that “every weapon, piece of armor, and ability-granting artifact or talisman” carries its own effects. DayOne’s review adds that there are “no character classes or skill trees; your character’s various equipment is their skillset.”
Your hero still earns experience and levels up, and AltChar’s reviewer reports that leveling unlocks more artifact slots, but there are no skill points to spend. Per Gaming Trend, character creation is just two steps: choose online or offline, then pick a skin. The first choice matters, because Gaming Trend and DayOne both report that an offline hero stays offline (solo and couch co-op only), while an online hero always needs a connection. Our co-op guide covers that decision.
The Twelve Gear Slots
Mojang’s gameplay systems article says the sequel expands combat slots “from 6 to 12, giving heroes more opportunities to create unique builds.” Xbox Wire’s June demo report lists what fills them:
| Slot | How many | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Melee weapon | 1 | Your basic attack combo and moveset |
| Ranged weapon | 1 | Bow or crossbow; ammo recharges on its own |
| Armor | 4 | Helmet, chestplate, leggings and boots |
| Artifacts | 3 | Active abilities, like spells |
| Talismans | 3 | Passive bonuses |
In the first game, armor was a single item. Design Director Laura de Llorens told the Official Xbox Podcast the team split it into four pieces “like in Minecraft vanilla.” Mojang also says items “now have a chance to feature random effects,” so two copies of the same weapon can play differently.
Artifacts: Your Active Abilities
Artifacts are the closest thing to class skills. PCGamesN’s review describes active skills that “cause explosions, poison clouds, or hordes of helpful bees,” alongside simpler buffs to defense, speed or elemental damage. Gaming Trend reports that artifacts charge up as you collect souls from defeated enemies.
Your mix of artifacts shapes your playstyle more than anything else, so it is the first place to look when a build feels flat. Xbox Wire’s gamescom writer noted that cooldowns are “mercifully brief,” which rewards leaning on them constantly rather than saving them.
Talismans: Passive Bonuses
Talismans are new to the sequel. Mojang calls them “a little sprinkle of extra numbers onto your abilities.” Examples in coverage so far include extra experience, higher maximum health and companions: PCGamesN mentions a wolf, and Xbox Wire’s June demo found “a bone that summoned a dog companion,” which draws enemy attention and respawns on a timer. Gaming Trend reports talismans are earned at major milestones (PCGamesN adds that some side quests award them) and level up as you use them, rather than at the Blacksmith.
Refining a Build: Blacksmith and Enchantsmith
Two vendors in the hub town of Brave Haven turn a pile of loot into a build:
- Blacksmith. Per Xbox Wire’s gamescom preview, any item can be upgraded “to the highest power level currently available to you,” and you can re-roll an item’s built-in buff. You never have to drop a favorite weapon just because a stronger one appeared.
- Enchantsmith. Enchantment Books go into a permanent library, and each item takes one enchantment. Our enchantments guide covers costs, limits and upgrades.
To see the whole picture, the Effects and Enchantments menu lists every effect from your weapons, armor and talismans in one place, and PCGamesN notes it highlights which item each bonus comes from. On a controller, Xbox Wire says pressing up on the D-pad opens your inventory, while holding it brings up a mini inventory for quick swaps without pausing your co-op partners. Mojang has not published a full control list for PlayStation, Switch or keyboard, so check the in-game controls screen on those.
Example Builds From Previews and Reviews
None of these are official presets, but they show the range the system supports:
- Ranged damage dealer. Xbox Wire’s gamescom writer combined dodge-roll enchantments with arrows fired on each roll and fire arrows, plus artifacts that dropped bombs and buffed the hero.
- Summoner. The June demo paired the dog-companion talisman with a healing weapon enchantment to keep hero and pet alive.
- Tank. Game Informer’s reviewer settled on an Emerald Hammer that “electrocuted nearby enemies,” a piercing crossbow, and armor enchanted to heal or boost potions. PCGamesN also built “a sturdy heal-tank.”
- Crowd control. PCGamesN describes splitting ice arrows that slow groups, followed by rapid rolls and lightning daggers.
- Elemental. Gaming Trend’s reviewer ran Fire Aspect on melee weapons, piercing bows, and an artifact that boosted fire damage.
Gaming Trend also reports that enemies scale with your level, so a strong build keeps the game manageable rather than trivial. Frequently Asked Questions
Does Minecraft Dungeons II have classes?
No. As in the first game, your gear defines your role, and you change it by swapping equipment.
How many gear slots are there?
Twelve: a melee weapon, a ranged weapon, four armor pieces, three artifacts and three talismans, per Mojang and Xbox Wire.
Can you respec in Minecraft Dungeons II?
There are no skill points to reset. Changing builds means swapping gear, and Enchantment Books stay in your library for reuse.
What are talismans?
A new equipment type that grants passive bonuses such as extra health, extra experience or a companion. Reviewers report they level up as you use them.
Can you switch a hero between online and offline?
Reviewers report you cannot. An offline hero is limited to solo and couch co-op, and an online hero always needs a connection.
