The Sift is a new dimension in Minecraft Dungeons II, a bright, soul-filled world that the Illager High Council uses as its base, and you get there by stepping through the rifts that open across the Overworld. Its influence shows up in the story’s opening stages, and you spend more and more time there as the adventure goes on. It is also the first new dimension for Minecraft as a whole in over 14 years, and Mojang has confirmed it is coming to Minecraft: Java and Bedrock Edition too.
This guide covers what the Sift is, how to get there and back, what changes once you are inside, and how the Dungeons II version relates to the one headed to Minecraft. It covers the launch version (September 29, 2026), which is the same on Xbox Series X|S, PC, PS5, Nintendo Switch and Switch 2. Details are verified against Mojang’s and Xbox’s official material, with reviewers’ reports attributed, and story details are kept light.
What the Sift Is
Mojang’s Minecraft Live recap calls the Sift “beautiful, vibrant, and teeming with souls,” a dimension that “lives in the new, interconnected Dungeons world.” Xbox Wire’s Sift announcement adds that it brings “an entirely different, colorful new look, new mobs (both companions and threats, all unique)” and, once you enter, “new rules to learn.” Named areas so far are the Meadows and the Carapace; Mojang is keeping the rest secret.
Design Director Laura de Llorens told the Official Xbox Podcast the team wanted a place “that didn’t feel necessarily threatening or necessarily very benevolent,” with an aesthetic “brand new to the world of Minecraft.”
It is also where the villains operate. Mojang’s Battle for Tokyo article introduces the Illager High Council (the Prime Enchanter, the Grand Illusioner and the Supreme Evoker) and says they are unleashing their soul-corrupted forces “from the Sift, a newly discovered dimension.” Reviewers describe the illagers stumbling on a huge portal to it and turning its soul power against the Overworld.
How to Get to the Sift
The way in is a rift. Mojang’s game page asks where the “mysterious rifts” opening across the Overworld lead, and answers: “To the Sift.” The Minecraft Live recap is more direct: “there are lots of rifts that appear throughout the world. If you do stumble across and then into one, it will transport you to the Sift.”
In practice there are two routes:
- Follow the main quest. Xbox Wire says the Sift’s effects appear “in the opening stages” of the story, as new enemies show up and souls fly through the world. Gaming Trend’s review says “you’ll often venture between these two dimensions during quests,” and PCGamesN’s says you “spend increasingly more time here as the adventure progresses.” If you lose the thread, Xbox Wire’s launch-eve hands-on says clicking the left thumbstick on a controller draws a Guidance Trail toward your active quest.
- Enter a rift while exploring. PCGamesN describes “rifts to the Sift dotted all over the environment,” most of them optional challenges with loot. Walk into one to cross over.
The Overworld itself has no loading screens, but Gaming Trend’s reviewer notes one exception: the transition between the Overworld and the Sift.
Getting Around, and Getting Back
The Sift has its own travel network. Xbox Wire says “each realm offers generous fast-travel options through Minecart Stations and Teleport Statues,” and Respawn Shrines sit across the map, typically near dungeon entrances and Boss Totems. If you fall in the Sift, you wake up in the hub town of Brave Haven, and the Teleport Statue there returns you to the nearest shrine you have passed, so a death does not mean retracing the whole route on foot.
Tides, Hazards and Mobs
This is where the “new rules” come in. Xbox Wire says “shifting tides within the Sift can affect your character and those around you,” and that “hazardous new blocks will alter how you approach exploration.” PCGamesN’s review names two of those tides: the Sift makes “your life easier in the Thrive” but drops “more punishing mobs upon you when the Endure tide hits.” The community wiki lists a third, the Flow tide, and says tides also affect soul gathering and movement.
TheSixthAxis’s review describes “tentacle-like fronds that reach out for you as you pass, cute-but-dangerous wildlife, and lethal pools of ichor.” Watch your footing, and plan bigger fights with the current tide in mind.
Why the Sift Is Worth the Trip
Rifts are one of the game’s best loot sources. Xbox Wire says Rifts and Dungeons reward loot chests, Enchantment Books and Echo Shards, and PCGamesN adds that they often lead to boss battles with unique gear and new enchantments. Our enchantments guide explains how to use those books.
It is not a small side area either. CGMagazine’s reviewer calls the Sift “roughly as large as the overworld itself,” and Xbox Wire’s writer said that after “roughly a dozen hours” they had “only scratched the surface” of both realms. Our how long to beat guide covers what that means for a full run.
The Sift in Minecraft Java and Bedrock
This is the same dimension Mojang is bringing to Minecraft. Per Xbox Wire, the Sift was “first announced at Gamescom,” showcased at Minecraft Live, and “will become part of Minecraft in 2027.” It joins the Overworld, the Nether and the End as Minecraft’s fourth dimension.
How the two versions relate, per official sources:
- Dungeons II comes first. Xbox Wire says the best way to get “a sneak peek at how the Sift will work” is to play Dungeons II, which gives “a taste of mobs, blocks, and biomes.”
- The Minecraft version is still under wraps. Mojang “isn’t talking too much about how to access the Sift, or how it will stand out from Dungeons II’s expression of it.” Minecraft Live showed a brief in-development look and one of its mobs.
- No announced crossover. Mojang has announced no link between your Sift progress in Dungeons II and Minecraft. The only confirmed cross-game reward is the Hero Cape, covered in our capes guide.
