Fantasy Life i: How to Farm

Fantasy Life i official screenshot

Farming in Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time opens during Chapter 4 of the main story, when the plot takes you to Inaji’s farm and you can then take the Farmer Life from Auntie Anne at the Guild. After that, buy farm plots from Cooke at your Base Camp, get seeds from Marco, then sow, water twice, and harvest with your hoe.

This guide walks through the unlock, buying farms and seeds, the current planting and watering controls (they changed a lot in June 2025), harvesting and Boss Veggies, and the fixes since launch, verified against official patch notes.

Unlocking the Farmer Life

Farmer is not one of the Lives you can take at the start. It opens in Chapter 4, where the story has you help out on the farm of Inaji, the Farmer Life Master. Level-5’s patch notes refer to that Chapter 4 story step as “Harvest vegetables on Inaji’s farm,” and Version 1.5.0 fixed a bug where leaving the farm map during it could block progress.

Once the story hands you the Farmer’s tools, player guides say to visit Auntie Anne at the Guild to formally take the Life. She is the Life switcher for every Life, so you use the same NPC to swap back to the Angler Life for fishing or anything else.

Buying Farms and Seeds

Farms live on your Base Camp island, and you place them yourself:

  • Farm plots come from Cooke in the Guild building at your Base Camp. Player guides put the price at 500 Dosh per farm. Your growing capacity depends on how many farms you have bought and placed, not on a fixed field.
  • Seeds come from Marco. Player guides list radish, potato, onion and pumpkin among the early options. Harvests also return seeds of the same crop, so you rarely need to rebuy the basics.
  • Changing a farm’s type no longer means tearing it down. Version 1.4.0 made the farm type changeable through remodeling.

Placing farms uses the same Base Camp building tools as the rest of your island, so plan space for them next to your house and shops.

Planting and Watering: The Current Controls

This is where the 2025 launch version and the current build differ most. At launch, you sowed and watered one tile at a time with the same interact button you used to harvest. In June 2025, Level-5 changed both, first on PC, PlayStation and Xbox in Version 1.3.1, then on Switch in Version 1.3.3:

  • Sow Seeds and Water Plants now target all tiles on the farm at once.
  • Water Plants now has its own button, separate from Sow Seeds and Harvest.

Level-5’s announcement on X summed it up as watering or planting across a whole farm “with a single action.” Follow the on-screen button prompts when standing at a farm, since the watering button depends on platform and your key configuration.

The growing loop itself is unchanged:

  1. Stand at a farm and Sow Seeds.
  2. Water Plants so the seeds sprout.
  3. When crops reach the sprout stage, water them again.
  4. Wait for them to finish growing, then harvest.

That second watering matters. Player guides warn that a sprout left unwatered withers, and you lose that crop and have to pull it out by hand. With whole-farm watering, fixing this is now one button press per farm, so the old excuse of skipping tiles is gone.

One more fix worth knowing: before Version 2.1 (February 2026), Base Camp farm plots could still look watered after you harvested them. If crops withered on you before that patch even though the plot looked watered, that display bug may be why. As of the current build it is fixed.

Harvesting and Boss Veggies

Grown crops are harvested with your hoe. Player guides describe two harvest actions, Dig and a stronger Dig Hard; on PC, Dig is on left-click and Dig Hard on left plus right-click, with the face buttons on controller shown in the prompts.

Now and then a farm produces a Boss Veggie, a giant crop you fight like a gathering boss. Player guides say it shows a red dig meter: position yourself until the meter turns blue, then attack with your hoe, and use Dig Hard on the final dig for an Excellent rating. Level-5 has patched Boss Veggies several times, including duplicated Boss Veggies in multiplayer (fixed in Version 1.4.0) and the Harvest Tornado III skill interrupting combos on them (fixed in Version 1.5.0).

Since the free Version 2.0 update, you can also Polish Life tools, including your hoe, through the Blacksmith, Carpenter and Alchemist Lives, and Version 2.1 added a Dark Dragon Hoe.

Tips Most Players Miss

  • Water on a circuit. Sow every farm, water every farm, then return once sprouts appear and water again.
  • Buy farms gradually. More farms than you can tend is worse than fewer farms you water on time.
  • Share the work in multiplayer. Guests can harvest on your farms; Version 2.1.2 fixed gathering buffs being used up per vegetable when a whole field was harvested at once.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you unlock farming in Fantasy Life i? Progress to Chapter 4, where the story takes you to Inaji’s farm, then take the Farmer Life from Auntie Anne at the Guild.

Where do you buy farms and seeds? Farms come from Cooke in the Guild building at your Base Camp, and seeds from Marco. Harvests also give seeds back.

Do you still water every tile by hand? No. Since the June 2025 updates, Sow Seeds and Water Plants cover every tile on a farm at once, and watering has its own button.

Why did my crops die? Almost always an unwatered sprout. Crops need watering after sowing and again once they sprout, or they wither.

What is a Boss Veggie? A giant crop that appears on your farms and has to be fought with your hoe. Stand where its dig meter turns blue before attacking.
