Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4: How to Get Campaign Early Access

To get campaign early access in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, pre-order the game digitally (on PC, Activision calls it a pre-purchase), in either the Standard or Vault Edition, on any platform. Campaign early access is live now: Activision announced it was “officially live” at 10 AM PT (1 PM ET) on Friday, October 16, one week before the game launches on October 23, and the same digital pre-order then opens all of DMZ early on Tuesday, October 20.

Physical pre-orders do not qualify and Game Pass does not cover it. Below is who gets in, how to set it up on each platform, when it went live, the sixteen missions and the rewards you bank for launch, and what is still locked until launch day.

Updated October 16, 2026: campaign early access is live. Activision’s launch announcement went up at 10 AM PT (1 PM ET), so we replaced our expected start time with that confirmed one, and added the mission count, every completion reward in order and the platforms Activision names. Our news story has the announcement itself.

Who Gets Campaign Early Access

Activision’s October 16 announcement spells it out: “All players who digitally pre-order or pre-purchase Modern Warfare 4 can access the game’s entire Campaign. This benefit applies to the Standard Digital Edition or Vault Edition of the game on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, PlayStation 5, Battle.net, Steam, and Nintendo Switch 2.” Its Modern Warfare 4 editions page lists the same benefit under “all digital editions.”

In practice that means:

  • Editions: the Digital Standard Edition and the Vault Edition both include it. The Vault Edition does not get in any earlier.
  • Platforms: Xbox Series X and S, Xbox on PC, PlayStation 5, Battle.net, Steam and Nintendo Switch 2. Activision names all six in its early access announcement.
  • Physical copies: not included. Activision describes the disc edition as “the full base game” and lists early access only under the digital editions, so a boxed pre-order from a retailer does not unlock anything early.
  • Game Pass: not included. Modern Warfare 4 is not on Game Pass at launch, so there is nothing to unlock through a subscription.

It is the full campaign, not a slice of it. Activision’s wording is “the game’s entire Campaign,” and access runs “all the way up until the official launch date for Modern Warfare 4 on October 23.”

How to Get Early Access, Step by Step

  1. Pick a digital edition. The Standard Edition is $69.99 and the Vault Edition is $99.99 on the PlayStation Store, Xbox Store, Steam and the Nintendo eShop. Either one gets you in, so the cheaper edition is all you need to play early.
  2. Pre-order on the platform you will play on. Buy it from your console’s store, the Xbox app, Battle.net or Steam. An Xbox Store purchase is an Xbox Play Anywhere title, so one purchase covers both Xbox Series X and S and Xbox on PC. Battle.net and Steam purchases stay on their own launchers.
  3. Download it, and check your PC first. PC preloading opened on October 15 at 9 AM PT. Our Modern Warfare 4 PC specs story covers the 115 GB install and the TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot requirement, which is worth sorting out before you start.
  4. Launch the game and pick Campaign. It has been playable since 10 AM PT (1 PM ET) on October 16. Multiplayer stays locked until launch, and DMZ until October 20.

Activision ties the benefit to holding a digital pre-order, not to when you placed it. Its live announcement tells players to “pre-order or pre-purchase Modern Warfare 4 today” to play the story now, so a pre-order placed during the early access week gets you straight in.

When Campaign Early Access Went Live

Campaign early access went live on Friday, October 16. Activision’s “Campaign Early Access Now Live” announcement went up at 10 AM PT, which is 1 PM ET and 6 PM in the UK; the copy it posted on Steam is stamped 1:00 PM ET. One announcement covered all six platforms at once.

That is the time we expected from Activision’s own precedent:

  • The Modern Warfare 4 beta used one Pacific-time start for every platform. The early access weekend opened at 11 AM PT, straight after the Call of Duty: NEXT showcase, and the open weekend opened at 10 AM PT on every platform at once, Switch 2 included.
  • The PC preload for the full game opened at 9 AM PT on October 15, the day before early access.
  • The last campaign early access, for Modern Warfare III in 2023, went live at 10 AM PT on all platforms at the same moment, a day after its preload.

Activision’s early access notices carry the usual caveat, “Actual play time subject to possible outages and applicable time zone differences,” so if the game will not connect, check Activision’s online services page before reinstalling anything.

The Sixteen Missions and the Rewards You Bank

Activision says the campaign “plays out across sixteen action-packed missions.” You play Private Park Hyun Jun as his squad fights back against a full-scale invasion of the Korean Peninsula, while the operator-turned-outlaw John Price hunts “the one pulling the strings,” with missions in Paris, New York and Mumbai as well.

Progress through the missions and you earn completion rewards, “all of which will be available for use in Multiplayer and DMZ upon the full game launch.” Activision lists them in the order you earn them:

  1. “Cho” Base Operator
  2. “No More Rules” Calling Card
  3. Double XP Token
  4. “Dallas” Base Operator
  5. “Ready Line” Loading Screen
  6. “Luca” Base Operator
  7. “Gone Dark” Emblem
  8. “Oh-Ji” Base Operator
  9. Double XP Token
  10. “Kal” Base Operator
  11. Double Weapon XP Token
  12. “Dunn” Base Operator
  13. Double Weapon XP Token
  14. “West” Base Operator
  15. Double XP Token
  16. “Park” Base Operator

That is eight Base Operators, three Double XP Tokens, two Double Weapon XP Tokens, a calling card, a loading screen and an emblem. Finishing the story before October 23 means all of it is waiting for you on day one.

DMZ Early Access Follows on October 20

Activision added a second early window on October 9. Its DMZ early access announcement says that starting Tuesday, October 20, players who have digitally pre-ordered or pre-purchased “can gain Early Access to all of DMZ.” The rules are the same as for the campaign: any digital edition, on any of the six platforms. Activision has dated it but has not given an hour.

That gives early buyers three days in Hajin before everyone else. DMZ progression runs on its own track from level 1 to 70, which unlocks your base’s stations, so a head start there is worth more than in the campaign. Our Modern Warfare 4 DMZ breakdown explains the Forward Operating Base, the deployment types and Activision’s own tips for leveling quickly.

One detail to watch: Activision lists the Vault Edition’s DMZ Deployment Bonus (an extra Active Duty slot plus a kit of insurance contracts, rescue beacons and gear) as arriving “at game launch on October 23.” It has not said whether Vault owners get it during DMZ early access.

What Stays Locked Until Launch

  • Multiplayer. No early access. It arrives with the full game.
  • The full launch. Activision says Modern Warfare 4 “releases on October 23 at midnight local time.”
  • Your campaign rewards. The operators, tokens and cosmetics you earn now become usable in Multiplayer and DMZ at full launch.
  • Launch-day bonuses. The Hunter Killer Operator Skin, Gilded Pearl Camo Pack and Inner Circuit M4 Blueprint from your pre-order all appear in Modern Warfare 4 at launch. The Hunter Killer skin is already usable in Black Ops 7 and Warzone if you pre-ordered on Xbox, PlayStation or PC.
  • Season 1 rewards. The Vault Edition’s season of BlackCell starts with the Season 1 Battle Pass, after launch.

If you are saving Double XP tokens for launch week, they carry over to Modern Warfare 4 and now only count down during matches, as our 2XP token story explains.

Tips Before You Pre-Order

  • Use the loyalty discount if you want the Vault Edition. Activision takes 10% off the Vault Edition for players who have played a qualifying Call of Duty from 2019 onward on the same platform account, including through Game Pass on Xbox. It only applies to pre-orders before October 23, and never to the $30 Standard-to-Vault upgrade.
  • The Standard Edition is enough for early access. Nothing about the early windows is Vault-only, so do not pay more just to play early.
  • Pick your platform carefully. Upgrades and bonuses stay on the platform you bought on. A Steam pre-order cannot be upgraded on Battle.net.
  • Catch up on the story. Captain Price picks up after Modern Warfare III. Our campaign trailer story covers the Korea setting, and our list of every Call of Duty game shows where this one sits in the series.
