Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 takes about 30 hours to beat if you follow the main story, around 45 to 50 hours with a healthy amount of side content, and roughly 70 hours for a completionist run, based on the HowLongToBeat averages from several thousand submitted playthroughs. The story is split into a prologue and three acts, not the five the 2025 version of this guide claimed. This guide covers the numbers by playstyle and platform, what each act contains, how the difficulty settings and the December 2025 content update change the length, and how to plan a run.
How long the game takes by playstyle
HowLongToBeat, an aggregator of player-submitted times, currently lists these averages across roughly 7,600 playthroughs:
- Main story only: about 29 and a half hours on average (median 29). Rushed runs land near 20 hours, unhurried ones past 40.
- Main story plus side content: about 47 and a half hours on average, from around 3,400 submissions.
- Completionist: about 70 hours on average, from around 2,200 submissions, with leisurely full clears reaching past 100.
- All playstyles combined: about 49 hours.
Sandfall’s own line before launch, as reported by player guides, was that there is roughly as much side content as main story, and the numbers bear that out. Those are averages, not targets; a player who parries well and skips optional bosses will be faster, and a player learning the parry timing from scratch on Expert will be slower.
Playtime by platform
The 2025 text invented a platform gap, claiming PC players finished in 24 to 28 hours and PlayStation 5 players in 30. The real data shows almost none. HowLongToBeat’s platform breakdown puts the main story at about 29 hours on PC, just under 31 on PlayStation 5, and just under 30 on Xbox Series X|S, with completionist runs at 69 to 72 hours on all three. The difference is within noise and reflects who submits times, not the game. Play on whichever platform you own.
One thing that does affect your playtime readout: since patch 1.5.0 (December 2025) the playtime shown on a save file counts time spent on Game Overs, which it did not before. That fix is not retroactive, so an older save under-reports.
How many acts there are and what each covers
Expedition 33 is built as a prologue, three acts, and an ending sequence. The 2025 version of this guide said five acts with a “climactic Act 5”; that was wrong. The official patch notes refer to “Act III” as the game’s final act (Challenge Modifiers unlock “Act III onward”, and Verso’s Drafts is “Accessible from Act III”), and player guides consistently list the structure as follows:
- Prologue: Lumière. The city, the Gommage, and the departure of the Expedition. Short, and where the game’s most-missed journals sit; patch 1.5.0 added the Old Key to the final area so they can be collected later in the same playthrough.
- Act I. The first stretch of the Continent, the core party, camping, the Curator, and the first big set of regions and bosses. The longest act for most first-time players because every system is being learned.
- Act II. A change in the party and in the map’s scope. Esquie gains traversal abilities that open the World Map up, side content multiplies, and this is where the hours between story and completionist runs start to diverge.
- Act III. The shortest critical path but the biggest optional slate: the endgame areas, the hardest bosses, New Game Plus after the credits, and, since December 2025, Verso’s Drafts and the new Endless Tower boss variants.
Act III is titled after Maelle, and it is where the story’s central reveal lands; our guide to how old Maelle is explains why that matters without spoiling it.
What the patches added to the endgame
If you are working from a 2025 estimate, add a few hours. Verified against the official patch notes:
- Patch 1.3.0 (June 2025) added a rematch against a late-game boss and Challenge Modifiers (damage caps of 99,999 or 999,999 and enemy HP multipliers from x2 to x100) from Act III onward, for players who want the endgame harder. It also rebalanced Story mode with 40 percent wider parry and dodge windows and 10 to 50 percent less incoming damage, which shortens the game for anyone who was dying a lot.
- Patch 1.4.0 (July 2025) added the Battle Retry prompt, so a lost boss fight no longer costs a reload and a walk back.
- Patch 1.5.0 (December 2025) added Verso’s Drafts, a new playable area on the World Map next to Lumière that needs Esquie’s Underwater ability, plus new Endless Tower bosses, new weapons, new Luminas and costumes, and Photo Mode. A completionist run today is longer than the 2025 averages by however long those take you.
None of this changed the main story’s length; the story itself has not been extended. The patches since, 1.5.3 in March 2026 through 1.5.6 in June 2026, fixed bugs and added anniversary haircuts and Arabic text support, none of which adds meaningful playtime, so the averages above still hold for the current build.
Planning a playthrough
Three habits keep a run from ballooning. First, rest at every Expedition Flag before a boss, because that is what saves the game; see our saving guide. Second, keep the whole party’s Lumina Points and weapon levels roughly even rather than over-investing in three favourites, since the story forces specific characters into the party at points. Third, do side content in Act II and early Act III rather than saving it all for the end, because the Act III endgame areas assume a party that has already done some of it.
If you just want to see the ending, 30 hours on Story or Expeditioner is a fair budget; for the platinum, plan for two weekends and expect to start New Game Plus. Every other post is on the Expedition 33 hub.
