Gears of War E-Day: How to Win Gnasher Fights

Marcus Fenix raises a Lancer in front of a stadium scoreboard as a COG soldier looks on in Gears of War E-Day

The Gnasher in Gears of War: E-Day holds 6 shells instead of 8 and now reloads round by round, so the biggest change to shotgun fights is ammo management: hit an active reload on a single shell to finish a kill instead of emptying and reloading the whole tube. Pair that with the new movement rules (cover cancels only work within 1.5 meters of cover, and you can shoot while sliding) and you have most of what wins close range in E-Day.

Everything below is verified against The Coalition’s gameplay updates post and settings guide for Gears of War: E-Day, as of September 30, 2026. The Coalition has not published Gnasher damage numbers or ranges, and it patched weapons during the open beta, so expect tuning after launch.

What Changed About the Gnasher

The Coalition rebuilt every weapon for E-Day. For the Gnasher, the official changes are:

  • Round-by-round active reload. You can load one or two shells quickly with an active reload rather than going through the full reload cycle. The Breechshot works the same way.
  • Smaller magazine. To balance that faster topping-up, capacity drops from 8 shells to 6.
  • Simulated ballistics. Every projectile in E-Day now has real travel time and tracers that match where the shot went. At shotgun range that matters little, but past it you have to lead targets. Some beta players called the Gnasher inconsistent; The Coalition has not addressed that directly, though its August 12 beta patch did improve hit detection delays in Horde Siege.
  • A bayonet mod (Horde Siege and Campaign only). The Coalition confirmed you can fit a bayonet to the Gnasher through weapon mods. Versus has no mods, so every Gnasher there is identical. Our weapon mods guide explains how to unlock them.

Tip 1: Reload One Shell, Not Six

The old habit was to fire and fully reload after every exchange. In E-Day that wastes the new system. After a shot, tap reload and hit the active reload window to slot in a single shell, then get back to shooting. Two practical rules:

  • Top up between fights, not in the middle of one, unless you need exactly one more shell to finish a downed enemy.
  • Count to six. Players coming from Gears 5 will run dry two shots earlier than they expect.

Set Auto Reload Mode to Manual (Reload Button) so the game never starts a full reload you did not ask for. The active reload bar sits under the reticle by default, where The Coalition says players use it more often; our controller settings guide shows how to move it back to the top right if you prefer.

Tip 2: Respect the 1.5 Meter Rule

A cover entry can only be canceled within 1.5 meters of the cover object. The Coalition explains the consequence directly: if an enemy is on the other side of cover, they “must travel into their Gnasher range before cancelling.” That means:

  • Hold your shot for the cancel. An enemy bouncing toward you has to come close before they can redirect, and they are on a predictable line until then.
  • Do not chain bounces from far out. Early cancels do not trigger, so you just slide into cover you did not want. Our wall bounce guide covers the technique in detail.
  • Expect momentum. Players can slow quickly during a cancel but take a moment to fully change direction, which The Coalition says leaves them “vulnerable to well-timed counters.”

Tip 3: Use the Slide and the New Movement

E-Day gives you options old Gears never had:

  • Slide shots. You can fire during a slide, and The Coalition specifically suggests sliding past a corner “to pull off a clutch Gnasher gib.” The slide cannot be spammed, so save it.
  • Evades and sprints are now real alternatives to cover bouncing for staying fast, per The Coalition.
  • Cover gaps. Duck or slide through low gaps under vehicles and through holes in walls to come out on an unexpected side.
  • Shoulder swap while aiming to fight around a corner from the side that exposes less of you.

Tip 4: Know When Not to Use It

Pick the right tool for the range. The Snub pistol is, per The Coalition, fast to draw, fires as fast as you pull the trigger and works as a “clean-up” weapon, which makes it a good finisher when your Gnasher is empty. The Lancer MK1 is deadly up close too. And in Horde Siege, a Breacher class gets the close-range loadout plus melee resistance, which suits a Gnasher playstyle; see our Horde Siege class guide.

Settings for Gnasher Fights

  • Aim Assist: The Coalition says the Default setting provides a standard level of assist in every mode, including Versus. Keep it on Default rather than Off unless you know you prefer raw aim.
  • Target sensitivity: set it separately from Look sensitivity. A lower Target value makes quick corrections at shotgun range easier.
  • Slide to Cover: turn it off if you keep sticking to cover when you meant to slide past it for a shot.
  • Audio: the Competitive audio preset highlights footsteps, which helps you hear a Gnasher rush before you see it.

Practice all of this in Combat Training, which supports four players. For Versus modes and maps, see our multiplayer and Horde guide, and find everything else on the Gears of War: E-Day hub.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many shells does the Gnasher hold in Gears of War E-Day? Six, down from eight in earlier games, to balance the new round-by-round active reload.

Can you active reload single shells in Gears of War E-Day? Yes. The Gnasher and Breechshot let you load one or two rounds with an active reload instead of a full reload.

Can you shoot while sliding? Yes. You can fire during a slide, and The Coalition suggests it for Gnasher shots around corners.

Is wall bouncing still in Gears of War E-Day? In a limited form. Cover cancels only work within 1.5 meters of cover, so chained bounces are slower.

Can you mod the Gnasher in Versus? No. Weapon mods, including the Gnasher bayonet, only work in Horde Siege and the Campaign.
