Activision confirms that the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 campaign has 16 missions, but it still has not published an estimate of how many hours it takes. Infinity Ward describes it as likely the biggest Modern Warfare campaign it has made: associate design director Alex Norris told Game Rant at the studio’s reveal event that it is “probably the largest Call of Duty campaign, as far as Modern Warfare goes” that the team has put together.
Campaign early access went live for digital pre-orders on Friday, October 16, at 10 AM PT (1 PM ET), as our news story on the early access launch reports, so player completion times will arrive within days, and we will add them here as early-access reports come in. Until then, below is everything official about its size and structure, the missions named so far, how difficulty changes the run, and how it stacks up against the last three Modern Warfare games.
What Activision and Infinity Ward Have Said About Its Size
No hour count has come from Activision, but its mission count and several official statements point to a longer campaign than recent years:
- 16 missions. Activision’s Campaign Early Access announcement says “the epic narrative plays out across sixteen action-packed missions,” set across the Korean Peninsula, Paris, New York and Mumbai.
- “Probably the largest” Modern Warfare campaign. Norris’s description, from an interview at Infinity Ward’s reveal event, republished by Military.com. In the same conversation he talked about keeping players engaged “for as many hours as the campaign may take,” without giving a number.
- More time in one setting. On Xbox Wire, narrative director Jeff Negus said the team “got to go a little bit further this time because of how much time we get to spend in Korea,” and that “we have a bigger cast this time as well.”
- Large, varied missions. Norris told Xbox Wire the studio wants “every other mission to feel significantly different from the one before it,” and described the Paris chase as “miles of authentic, grounded experience.”
Two playable characters and two storylines also add up. You fight as Private Park Hyun Jun, a young South Korean soldier caught in North Korea’s invasion, while Captain Price runs an off-book hunt for a weapon heading to a villain known as the Archer, with Ghost and Gaz sent to bring him in.
The Missions Named So Far
Activision confirms 16 missions in total, but it has named only two of them itself:
- Entrenched. The mission everyone could play in the August open beta, the first full campaign mission ever included in a Call of Duty beta. You join a large-scale assault to stop a nuclear power station falling into enemy hands, alongside armored vehicles and infantry.
- Losing Ground. Shown in a July “Campaign First Look” video, which Activision describes as a Campaign Early Access mission.
Activision’s early access announcement places the 16 missions across the Korean Peninsula, Paris, New York and Mumbai. Its earlier descriptions fill in what happens there: trench warfare in Korea, close-quarters combat in New York, chases through Paris, SAS night raids in Mumbai and city-wide assaults to retake occupied territory.
A fuller picture comes from the game’s trophy list, which trophy-tracking sites posted on October 13 and which Activision has not published itself. Its mission-specific trophies name ten missions: Entrenched, Losing Ground, Stranded, Mayhem, Following Orders, Hired Gun, Assassins, Counter Attack, Escape and Out in the Cold. Trophy lists rarely touch every mission, so the other six of Activision’s 16 are most likely missions without a trophy of their own. The same list mentions a Base Camp you can repair and 50 Notes to read, which hints at a hub area and collectibles that would add time for completionists.
How Difficulty Changes the Length
The trophy list also names the difficulty settings: Hardened and Veteran each appear in trophy conditions, and one trophy asks you to finish the game on Realism. Activision has not posted its own difficulty list yet, but those names match the ladder Infinity Ward used in Modern Warfare (2019), where Realism sat above Veteran.
As in every Call of Duty, the harder settings stretch the campaign more than anything else. Expect a Veteran or Realism run to take noticeably longer than a first playthrough on a normal setting, because checkpoints replay more often and fights have to be approached slowly.
How It Compares With Recent Modern Warfare Games
For context, this is how the last three campaigns in the reboot series landed, by mission count and by reviewers’ reports of their length:
- Modern Warfare (2019), Infinity Ward: 14 missions. Reviewers generally finished it in around six to seven hours.
- Modern Warfare II (2022), Infinity Ward: 17 missions. Reviewers generally reported six to eight hours.
- Modern Warfare III (2023), Sledgehammer Games: 14 missions. Reviewers widely clocked it at around four to five hours, and its short length was its most common criticism.
At 16 missions, Modern Warfare 4 has two more than Modern Warfare III and one fewer than Modern Warfare II. Mission count is only a rough guide to hours, though: the two Infinity Ward entries ran longer than Modern Warfare III, and Infinity Ward is back in charge of this one, calling it “probably the largest” yet. On that basis we expect Modern Warfare 4 to beat Modern Warfare III comfortably and land at or above Modern Warfare II, but that is an expectation, not a figure.
Treat exact hour counts from other sites with caution for now. Several guide sites listed hour ranges for Modern Warfare 4 before early access opened, but none of them cited Activision or anyone who had finished the game, so they are guesses.
When You Can Start the Campaign
- Now, with a digital pre-order: campaign early access went live on Friday, October 16, for the Standard or Vault Edition on every platform, and Activision says it covers “the game’s entire Campaign.” Our campaign early access guide explains who qualifies and how to start.
- Tuesday, October 20: DMZ early access opens for the same digital pre-orders.
- Friday, October 23: the full launch, at midnight local time, for everyone including physical copies.
That gives early-access players a full week with the campaign before multiplayer opens, which Activision itself suggests using to finish the story first. Finishing missions also banks 16 completion rewards, earned in order from the “Cho” Base Operator to the “Park” Base Operator, which Activision says will all be usable in Multiplayer and DMZ once the full game launches. If you have not picked an edition yet, our Modern Warfare 4 edition guide shows that the cheaper Standard Edition is enough for early access. To catch up on the story beforehand, our campaign trailer story covers the setup, and our list of every Call of Duty game shows where this one fits. Our Modern Warfare 4 Zombies explainer covers what else is, and is not, in the box.
