To fish in Fields of Mistria, equip a fishing rod, hold the tool button to cast near a dark fish shadow in the water, and wait for an exclamation point to appear over your bobber before pressing the tool button again to reel it in. Pressing too early scares the fish away. Below we cover the controls, how to read shadows and schools, where fish live, diving, bait and the fish trap, and how to catch the four legendary fish.
This guide reflects the current 1.0 release of Fields of Mistria on PC. Fishing has been in the game since Early Access began, but Fish Bait and the fish trap arrived with the fourth major update in February 2026, so older guides skip them.
What You Need Before Your First Cast
You need a rod. The cheapest is the Worn Fishing Rod, sold by Terithia at the Tackle Shop on The Beach for 500 tesserae from the start of the game. Our guide on how to get a fishing rod covers the walk there and every upgrade from Copper to Mistril.
You can fish in almost any water: rivers, ponds, the ocean and even pools inside the Mines. Per the community wiki, the one exception is the fountain in town.
How to Cast, Hook and Reel In
- Select the rod on your toolbar with the number keys or the mouse wheel (LB and RB on a controller).
- Face the water and hold the tool button (left click on mouse). A square marker shows where the bobber will land and moves further out the longer you hold. A red X means you cannot fish that tile.
- Release to cast, aiming as close to a fish shadow as you can.
- Wait. A curious fish swims over and may nibble the bobber a few times. Do nothing yet.
- Press the tool button when “!” appears above the bobber. The catch pops up with its name, price and description the first time you land each species.
Per the community wiki’s controls table, the tool button is X on a controller in the Xbox layout and Y in the Nintendo layout, and every input can be rebound in Settings. Casting costs no stamina; per the wiki, stamina is spent only when you actually land something, so a missed bite costs you nothing but a few seconds.
Reading Shadows and Schools
Fish show up as dark shadows in four sizes: small, medium, large and giant, so you can pick your target before you cast.
Occasionally fish bunch into a school. Cast into it and you can pull out several fish in a row (two to five, per the community wiki) until it is empty. Junk, wood and treasure boxes full of tesserae and loot also come up on the line.
Where and When to Fish
Which fish bite depends on the kind of water, the season and the weather.
- Rivers: your own farm, town, the Eastern Road and The Narrows.
- Ponds: the pond west of the Manor in the north of town, the Eastern Road and The Deep Woods.
- Ocean: The Beach, plus the shoreline at Sweetwater Farm and the Western Ruins.
- The Mines: water on the floors of each biome has its own fish, which count toward museum sets and requests.
Your farm river is the easiest daily habit. If a request needs a fish you have not caught, Terithia also sells a seasonal selection.
Diving, Bait and the Fish Trap
Dive spots are dark holes in the water. Swim over to one and your character ducks under and comes up holding an item, sometimes a fish that can only be found this way. Diving uses no stamina and still earns Fishing experience: per the wiki, 10 points per dive against 20 for a caught fish.
Fish Bait came with the fourth major update. It is produced by Terrariums, which unlock through a quest at Ruby Town Rank. Place non-bee insects in a Terrarium, fill the crop or forage request it gives you a few days later, and it pays out Fish Bait or Bug Pheromones depending on the insects’ rarity. Throw the bait into open water and it summons a fish of the same rarity as the bait, and since the v0.15.2 patch that also works in the Mines. The same bait goes into the fish trap on the west side of The Beach, which opens after the “Repair the Beach Bridge” quest. Load it and come back the next day for a haul that includes a unique fish and a furniture set.
How to Catch Legendary Fish
Legendary fish do not appear at all until you buy the Legendary perk, a Tier 3 Fishing perk that opens at Fishing level 30, from Caldarus’ shrine on your farm using essence. After that, you get a morning message that a legendary fish is nearby whenever the conditions line up. Per the community wiki:

You can catch each one only once per save, a limit NPC Studio added in the first major update. Donate it to the museum’s Fish Wing rather than selling it; the wiki notes legendaries sell for little and even Terithia is only neutral about receiving one as a gift.
Fishing Perks Worth Buying Early
Fishing perk tiers open at levels 1, 15, 30, 45 and 60, bought with essence at Caldarus’ shrine. Appealing Reeling (Tier 1) draws fish from further away and Weedline Watcher cuts down on junk. At Tier 2, Perfect Catch makes uncommon and rare fish more common and Lucky Haul sometimes doubles a catch.
If you enjoy fishing as a relaxing loop between chores, it plays a similar role to fishing in Inzoi, while Fantasy Life i’s fishing adds a reeling fight with a line gauge that Mistria’s single well-timed press does without.
