To go to jail in Inzoi, your Zoi has to commit crimes in front of witnesses until their crime score crosses the arrest threshold, at which point the police take them into custody and a trial follows. Getting out means paying bail, softening the verdict in court, or serving the sentence until the release option appears. That is a very different system from the Karma-based arrests of the 2025 launch build, so this guide covers how crime works now, how to get arrested deliberately, what prison life looks like, and every route back out.
How Jail Changed Since 2025
At Early Access launch, low Karma and a few shady interactions landed a Zoi in a cell with a vending machine. The developer has rebuilt that layer several times, verified against official patch notes:
- v0.2.0 (June 2025) made prison harsher on new saves: vending machines removed, meals only at set times, lifer inmates, no casual conversation, worse beds.
- v0.5.0 (December 2025) added the real crime system: a Crime skill, thief and scammer interactions, crime scores, wanted status, bail, lawyers, court properties and trials.
- v0.7.0 (March 2026) added arrests for vehicle theft, counted crop theft as theft, stopped Zois awaiting trial from leaving the city, and reduced arrest chances for misdemeanours.
- v0.8.0 (April 2026) added criminal masks, bought from the Suspicious Job Agency at Crime skill level 5, that make witnesses flee instead of calling the police.
Karma still shapes how Zois treat you (see our Karma guide), but the crime score decides whether the police move in.
How to Get Arrested on Purpose
Crime is limited to Young Adult and older Zois. The first crime interaction unlocks at Crime skill level 0 for a Zoi who meets at least one condition: owning 2,000 Mew or less or struggling with debt, heavy stress from family conflict or a lack of family support, or the Rulebreaker trait or Malicious characteristic. Building a criminal from scratch, pick Rulebreaker in Create a Zoi.
From there:
- Visit the Suspicious Job Agency. Its bulletin board sells crime information and shady jobs. Since v0.8.0 the menu shows crime interactions above your level, but you still need the matching skill to use them.
- Pick a specialty. Thief interactions (“Pick Door Lock”, “Break Down Door”, “Open Safe”) lean on Handiwork, Programming and Fitness. Scammer interactions (“Attempt Voice Phishing”, “Hold Fake Seminar”) lean on Rhetoric and Critical Thinking.
- Do it where people can see. Witnesses report crimes to the police, who either issue a fine on the spot or take the Zoi into custody. Each crime raises the crime score, and once it passes the threshold the police can arrest immediately. If you want jail rather than a fine, keep going until the score is high and skip the mask.
- Or get caught later. A thief who flees the scene can be wanted for up to a day, and any police encounter in that window ends in arrest.
Traffic accidents are a special case: per the v0.5.0 notes, they skip the trial and send the Zoi straight to jail. Punching other Zois (the E key since v0.10.0) sends the victim to hospital, not the attacker to a cell, so fights are not a route in.
Life Inside
Once sentenced, the Zoi changes into a prison uniform, loses their bag, and lives on the prison’s schedule with set meal times and needs that are harder to satisfy. Other inmates include lifers you can talk to, provoke or fight (since v0.4.0). The remaining sentence time is displayed, and scheduled activities elsewhere in the city are cancelled while a Zoi is inside.
The developer’s 2026 roadmap promised full prison properties with a yard, library, workshop and visitation room. None has appeared in a patch note as of v0.10.4, so the prison is still a basic cell block.
How to Get Out of Jail
There are four ways out, in roughly the order you will meet them:
- Pay the fine. Zois with a low crime score are simply fined when arrested and walk away.
- Post bail. A Zoi placed under immediate arrest can pay bail and go home to prepare for trial. Skip it and they wait in a detention centre until the court date.
- Win, or soften, the trial. Select your Zoi to appoint a lawyer. Free lawyers barely help; elite lawyers raise the odds of a reduced sentence or an acquittal, and a trial preparation mission shapes the opportunity cards that appear in court. Trials usually end guilty, and a failed acquittal attempt can mean a harsher sentence, so pick the card answers carefully. The verdict is acquittal, a fine, or custody.
- Serve the time. With the sentence clock at zero, the release interaction on your Zoi lets them leave. The 2025 version of this guide quoted early player reports of a 9 AM automatic release and a manual “Get Out of Jail” option from 4 AM; those predate the trial system and we could not confirm the current timings, so watch the displayed sentence instead.
There is also the unofficial exit. Escaping prison has been acknowledged in patch notes since v0.3.0, and the Emergency Rescue option, which early player reports place in the Psycat Guide (F1 by default), can pull a stuck Zoi out. Treat it as a last resort; the developer has promised more realistic reactions to escapes.
