Minecraft Dungeons II: Whether It Has Cross Save

Yes: Minecraft Dungeons II has cross progression. Your hero is stored online, and if you link each platform’s account to the same Microsoft account, you keep playing the same hero on Steam, Xbox, PlayStation or Switch. Mojang confirmed it in its launch-day co-op article.

The catch is offline heroes, which stay offline. Here are the details.

How Cross Progression Works

Mojang’s technical director Stefan Annell explained it: “We store hero data online in our backend, so your progression isn’t tied to one specific device.”

  • Same Microsoft account, same hero: “Linking your platform accounts to the same Microsoft account will let you keep playing with the same hero,” Mojang says, using the example of switching between a Steam Deck and an Xbox.
  • Playing on a friend’s device: you can sign in with your own platform account on someone else’s console and pick up your hero there.

How to Carry Your Hero Across Platforms

  1. Play online with your hero on your first platform.
  2. On your second platform, link that platform’s account to the same Microsoft account.
  3. Choose your online hero; your progression loads from Mojang’s servers.

Offline Heroes Stay Offline

Online and offline are separate modes. Reviewers and early players report that a hero created in offline mode can’t be moved online or converted later, even by editing save files. If you want cross progression, create your hero online from the start.

Co-op and Your Progress

  • Story progress follows the host. When you join a friend, you play through their story.
  • Items come with you. Content creators report that items you collect in someone else’s world carry over to your own hero.

Mojang’s article also explains the co-op side: parties are joined with an 8-character code in a “join by party code” dialog, matchmaking pairs you by story progress, region and power level, and dedicated servers are picked by the party’s ping. Our co-op guide covers setting up a party.

Platform Notes

  • Nintendo Switch and Switch 2: Nintendo’s listing supports Save Data Cloud for Switch Online members.
  • Xbox and Windows: the game supports Xbox Play Anywhere, so an Xbox and a Windows copy share one purchase; see our editions guide.
  • Steam Deck: Mojang uses it as its cross-progression example, but Steam lists the game for Windows only and hasn’t rated it for Deck, and early players report launch problems under Proton. Check before relying on it.
  • Offline save files on PC: Mojang hasn’t documented where offline heroes are saved. The save folder you’ll find in older guides belongs to the first Minecraft Dungeons.

Purchases Across Platforms

Your hero’s progress moves with your Microsoft account. Mojang hasn’t said whether platform purchases like the Deluxe Edition extras follow you to another platform, so treat those as tied to the store you bought them on until it does.
