The Witcher 3 Remastered on Switch 2: Performance, Controls, and the Free Upgrade

The Witcher 3 returned to Nintendo hardware on September 29, and this time it’s no miracle port running on fumes: the native Switch 2 Remaster targets 1080p docked with 30-40fps and VRR, ships with both expansions, supports mods, and, the headline for 2019 veterans: owners of the original Switch port get it as a free upgrade. Here’s everything CDPR has confirmed, including the Switch 2 section of its official change list.

Updated October 5, 2026: no physical Switch 2 edition has been announced; the Remaster is digital-only on Switch 2, and original Switch cartridge owners can still claim it.

The Free Upgrade

If you bought the famous “but it runs!” 2019 Switch port, the Switch 2 Remaster is free. CD Projekt Red’s announcement says owners of The Witcher 3 on Nintendo Switch can claim the Remaster on Switch 2 when it releases. That’s the same free-upgrade treatment as every other platform, honoring a six-year-old purchase, and it turns the most compromised version of the game into arguably its most interesting one.

Performance Targets

Straight from CDPR’s Switch 2 presentation:

  • 720p handheld / 1080p docked
  • 30-40fps with VRR; closer to 40fps docked on a 120Hz display
  • The full Remaster feature set travels: reworked lighting, the new skill trees, combat overhaul, and both expansions included

The official change list specifies VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) in handheld mode, plus HDR (High Dynamic Range) support.

The 2019 port ran dynamic 540p at a hopeful 30; this is a different century of handheld Witcher.

The Nintendo-Flavored Controls

CDPR built genuinely platform-specific input. Its official change list names four playstyles: Handheld, Pro Controller, Dual Grip (using Motion Controls) and Mouse Sensor, plus these Switch 2 features:

  • Motion Control Patterns in two modes, Always Enabled or Horse Only, for using primary and secondary consumables, calling your horse, casting Signs, using your crossbow, throwing bombs, and making your horse gallop or stop
  • Mouse Sensor in two modes, Always Enabled or Dynamic, supporting three control schemes: Comfort, Dynamic and Default
  • Gyroscope aiming in the Handheld, Pro Controller and Dual Grip playstyles, with two modes: Always Enabled and Ranged Weapons
  • Touch Screen input in menus, dialogue, the world map, Gwent and Photo Mode; Gwent frankly always belonged on a touchscreen
  • Joy-Con 2 HD Rumble, which CDPR says delivers more varied and immersive vibration feedback
  • A dedicated Motion Controls tutorial you can replay at any time from the Main Menu and Pause Menu

Mods on a Nintendo Console

Yes, really: the Remaster’s mod.io system reaches Switch 2 with “most mods” available, within Nintendo’s guidelines and technical limits (the 8K texture packs stay home). The change list calls it Cross Platform Mod Support and puts it in the main menu under Mods. A modded Witcher 3 in handheld is a sentence nobody sane predicted in 2019.

Physical Copies and Launch Timing

  • Physical release: none has been announced. On Switch 2 the Remaster is sold digitally on the Nintendo eShop, and there is no Switch 2 cartridge. If you own the original Switch version on a cartridge, CD Projekt Red’s Switch 2 announcement says physical owners can claim the upgrade too.
  • It launched on September 29: CD Projekt Red unlocked every platform, Switch 2 included, at the same moment, 10 AM GMT (6 AM EDT, 3 AM PDT). See our release times news for the full map, and our launch story for what to check first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do my old Switch saves carry over? Save compatibility plus cross progression covers the migration; link your CDPR account on the old version now.

Is it 60fps anywhere on Switch 2? 30-40 with VRR is the stated envelope; 120Hz displays help docked smoothness, not the cap.

Does Gwent really work by touch? Confirmed: the change list lists Touch Screen input in Gwent, and it’s the correct way to play cards.

Can I relearn the motion controls later? Yes. CDPR says the dedicated Motion Controls tutorial can be replayed at any time from the Main Menu and Pause Menu.

Original Switch (1) support? The Remaster is Switch 2 native; the 2019 port remains the Switch 1 version.
