You buy Flint and Tinder in World of Warcraft: Forever from a general goods, trade supplies or cooking supplies vendor, found in nearly every starting area, town and capital, for about 1 silver 35 copper. It is a tool, not a material: keep it in your bags and it is never used up, so one purchase lasts your whole character.
Flint and Tinder is what lets a cook light a campfire, the start of Forever’s new Camping system. Below are the vendors that sell it zone by zone, the quest that gives you one for free, how to make a campfire with it, and the higher campfires that still need it. Vendor lists and prices are as of November 7, three days after launch.
What Flint and Tinder Is For
Flint and Tinder is the tool for every campfire recipe in Cooking: the Basic Campfire, the Journeyman Campfire and the Expert Campfire. You need it in your bags when you craft the campfire kit, alongside the wood the recipe uses. Blizzard’s Gather Around the Campfire post says the Basic Campfire needs only Cooking skill 1 and holds up to three camp features from nearby players, so any character with Cooking can carry one.
Without Flint and Tinder in your bags, the Professions window will not let you create a campfire kit, even if you have the wood. That is the most common reason a new cook cannot make a fire.
Where to Buy Flint and Tinder
Look for a merchant labeled General Goods, General Supplies, Trade Supplies or Cooking Supplies. A city guard can point you to the right part of town. Here are the vendors that sell it, by zone:
| Zone | Vendors |
|---|---|
| Elwynn Forest | Brog Hamfist, Drake Lindgren |
| Stormwind City | Erika Tate, Thurman Mullby |
| Dun Morogh (including Ironforge) | Bryllia Ironbrand, Emrul Riknussun |
| Teldrassil | Aldia, Nyoma |
| Darnassus | Ellandrieth, Fyldan |
| Westfall | Quartermaster Lewis |
| Redridge Mountains | Gloria Femmel, Kalsey Sanden, Lindsay Ashlock |
| Duskwood | Mabel Solaj |
| Wetlands | Gruham Rumdnul |
| Hillsbrad Foothills | Derak Nightfall, Kayren Soothallow, Micha Yance |
| Arathi Highlands | Graud |
| Durotar | Jark, K’waii |
| Orgrimmar | Trak’gen, Xen’to |
| The Barrens | Barg, Aza’bek |
| Thunder Bluff | Kuruk, Naal Mistrunner |
| Tirisfal Glades (including Undercity) | Eleanor Rusk, Ronald Burch |
| Stonetalon Mountains | Chylina, Grawnal |
| Ashenvale | Haljan Oakheart |
| Desolace | Tukk, Wulan |
| Tanaris | Jabbey |
| Zephras Isle | Antelariaa Cloudgaze, Veena Vericloud, Zerril Softbreeze |
The price is about 1 silver 35 copper at most of them, and a little less at a few. Both Teldrassil sellers in Dolanaar list it at exactly 1 silver 35 copper, Aldia (General Supplies) and Nyoma (Cooking Supplies, beside Zarrin the cook), and we bought ours from Nyoma. Stock is unlimited, so you never have to wait for a restock.
There is one more seller: an Engineer’s Reagent Bot. Blizzard lists it as the Engineering camp feature that “lets you buy reagents at the camp,” and it carries Flint and Tinder and Simple Wood too, so a camp with a Reagent Bot can supply someone who forgot theirs.
The Free Flint and Tinder From a Quest
The quest chain for the Cozy Sleeping Bag hands you one. The Stepping Stones quest ends at a hidden camp in Stonetalon Mountains, and its reward includes Flint and Tinder and three Simple Wood. A short optional quest at the same camp, Rekindle, has you use them to light the camp’s firepit. The chain starts at level 14, and our guide to getting the sleeping bag has the full route. If you are below level 14 or nowhere near Stonetalon, buying one is quicker.
How to Make a Campfire, Step by Step
- Learn Cooking from a Cooking trainer in a starting area or major city. It is a secondary profession, so it costs none of your two primary slots. Our guide to how to cook covers the trainers.
- Buy Flint and Tinder and Simple Wood from one of the vendors above. The Basic Campfire takes one Simple Wood.
- Press K to open the Professions window and select Cooking.
- Select Basic Campfire and click Create. You get a Basic Campfire Kit in your bags, and the wood is used up while the Flint and Tinder stays.
- Use the kit from your bags, and a red circle appears on the ground: click where you want the fire. Your character then spends about 10 seconds building it, under a cast bar named Basic Campfire. We built ours beside Zarrin’s cauldron in Dolanaar, and the kit was gone from our bags once the fire stood. It will not place everywhere: inside Darnassus the game told us “You can’t use that here,” and the same kit worked once we were out in Teldrassil. It will not work indoors either, so build your fire outside.
- Sit down by the fire for at least a minute. Blizzard says players “sitting or crafting at a campsite for at least 1 minute will gain the benefits from other camp features.” Our guide to sitting by the campfire covers the sit key and the poses that count.
We recorded ourselves making a campfire on PC for the video at the end of this guide.
Each kit makes one fire, and there is a short cooldown of about five minutes between placing campfires, so you cannot drop several in a row.
Higher Campfires Still Need It
Blizzard says “cooks can eventually learn upgraded Campfires that allow five or even 10 objects to be placed at a camp.” Both use the same Flint and Tinder with better wood:
| Campfire | Wood | Camp features it holds |
|---|---|---|
| Basic Campfire | Simple Wood | 3 |
| Journeyman Campfire | Star Wood | 5 |
| Expert Campfire | Thick Logs | 10 |
The Journeyman Campfire needs roughly 140 Cooking to use and the Expert Campfire roughly 220, so a dedicated cook gets there well before the level cap.
Tips
- Never sell it. Flint and Tinder sits in your bags like junk, and it is easy to vendor by accident. If you do, buy another at any vendor above.
- One is enough. It never runs out, so a second copy only wastes a bag slot.
- Look at the Legacy perks. Blizzard’s Legacy system overview says the Reagent Economy perk makes tier 1 camping features “require no materials to craft,” and Field Guide shortens the cooldown on placing camping features.
