WoW Forever: Why You Are Not Getting the Campfire Buff

Players resting around a campfire beside a canvas tent in a forest in World of Warcraft: Forever

If you are not getting the campfire buff in World of Warcraft: Forever, the usual reasons are that you stood up before a full minute had passed, that no camp features have been placed at the fire, or that a class buff you already have blocks the camp version. If it is the campfire experience buff that seems to do nothing, the Camp Tent only tops up rested experience, so it has no effect when you are already rested past its amount.

Below we go through each cause with its fix, in the order worth checking, then the separate experience bonuses people mix up with the camp buffs. Rules come from Blizzard’s camping article, its deep dive panel recap and its WoW Forever development notes, as of November 7. If your problem is the “Sit near the campfire” step of The Great Outdoors quest, our guide to sitting by the campfire covers that quest objective in detail.

How the Campfire Buff Is Supposed to Work

Blizzard’s Gather Around the Campfire post sets three rules:

  1. A campfire must be nearby. “All Camping features require a campfire to be nearby.”
  2. Someone has to place camp features. A Basic Campfire “can support up to three special crafted objects contributed by nearby players,” each player adding one, and those objects are where the buffs come from.
  3. You have to sit for a minute. “Players sitting or crafting at a campsite for at least 1 minute will gain the benefits from other camp features.”

Do all three and the buffs last an hour; the deep dive panel recap calls them “one-hour buffs.” Our guide to how camping works lists every feature and the buff it gives.

Fixes, in Order

1. Stay down for the full minute

Moving, jumping, attacking or using an ability that moves you stands you up and restarts the wait. Blizzard’s development notes say you can buff, cast and craft while you wait without standing up, and that the buff works while “sitting, sitting in a chair, sleeping, lying down, or using the kneeling emote.” Press X or type /sit, then leave your movement keys alone for a full minute. When you sit, a Welcoming Campfire buff appears with a countdown, and its tooltip reads: “Grants various camp benefits after 1 min spent sitting near the campfire. You may also craft using tradeskills, as long as you do not move.” If that buff never appears, you are not close enough to the fire; if it is there, wait out the countdown. We sat through it ourselves on a Night Elf Hunter at Lyreena Duskblade’s camp outside Dolanaar.

2. Get closer to the fire

The fire has to be nearby, and “nearby” is not the far edge of a big camp. Stand right beside it, not in it: Blizzard’s notes say campfires still burn players at level 5 and above, at reduced damage below 90% health. Sit down again once you have moved.

3. Check that camp features are actually placed

A bare campfire lets you cook, and it is the base for features, but the stat buffs come from the camp features around it: a First Aid Kit, a Sharpening Wheel, a Camp Tent and so on. If nobody at the fire has placed one, there are no feature buffs to collect. Each player can add one feature, and every feature needs its profession at skill 20 or higher. A cook builds the fire itself; our guides to Flint and Tinder and Simple Wood cover the materials.

4. Look for a class buff that blocks it

This is the one that catches groups. Blizzard says camp effects “are variants of buffs normally provided by specific classes and are exclusive with them,” and later changed the wording to “mutually exclusive” “to reduce some confusion around functionality.” You cannot hold both:

Camp feature Blocked by
First Aid Kit Power Word: Fortitude
Fish Bowl Blessing of Kings
Mana Well Blessing of Wisdom
Sharpening Wheel Strength of Earth Totem
Enchanted Lute Mark of the Wild
Incense Candle Arcane Intellect
Camp Chair Moonkin Aura
Faction Banner Divine Spirit

If a Priest in your group has you under Fortitude, the First Aid Kit will not add anything. Bring features your classes do not already cover.

5. Check your faction for the banner

The Tailoring Faction Banner only buffs “members of your faction,” per Blizzard’s table. If a player from the other faction placed the banner at your fire, it does nothing for you.

6. The fire may have gone out

Campfires burn for a limited time, and features need the fire nearby. If the flames are gone, a cook has to place a new one before anyone can rest there again.

Why the Campfire XP Buff Does Nothing

The camp’s experience feature is the Leatherworking Camp Tent, which Blizzard says grants rested experience worth 5% of a level and has “no effect if Rested experience already exceeds that value.” If you just logged in after a night in an inn, your rested bar may already be past that, so the tent adds nothing. Use the tent after you have spent your rested bonus.

Blizzard’s notes also mention a Boosted Rest debuff tied to this feature, with a tooltip rewritten during the beta to make it clearer. If you have it, you already took the tent’s rested experience recently; read the tooltip for how long until you can benefit again.

Other Experience Bonuses People Mix Up

  • The Cozy Sleeping Bag. Lying on it adds 1% experience gain per minute, up to 3%, and has a one-hour cooldown. It is a separate item from the camp; our guide to getting the sleeping bag has the quest chain.
  • Cooked food. Blizzard’s recap says crafted food in Forever “can grant a small experience bonus and stat boosts.” Eat it while you sit at the camp. Our guide to how to cook covers the recipes.
  • Rested experience itself. The Legacy system’s Well Rested talent increases rested experience gains and raises the cap, per Blizzard’s recap.

Still Not Working?

As of November 7, Blizzard’s known issues list does not include the campfire buff. If you have checked every step above, log out and back in, then try once more at a fresh fire with at least one feature placed. If it still fails, report it in Blizzard’s WoW Forever Bug Report forum with your character’s name, ruleset and the features at the fire. Every other guide is on our World of Warcraft hub.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why am I not getting the campfire buff in WoW Forever? Usually because you stood up before a full minute, no camp features were placed at the fire, or a class buff you already have blocks the camp version.

How long do you have to sit at a campfire? At least one minute, sitting, lying down, sleeping, sitting in a chair or kneeling.

Why is the campfire XP buff not working? The Camp Tent’s rested experience has no effect if your rested experience is already above its amount. Use it after you have spent your rested bonus.

Do campfire buffs stack with class buffs? No. Each camp buff is mutually exclusive with the class buff it copies, such as Power Word: Fortitude or Arcane Intellect.

Does a campfire on its own give a buff? The fire lets you cook and holds the camp features. The stat buffs come from the features players place around it.
